From Rome with Love: How Ancient Wonders Inspire Modern Marketing

Ciao Amico!

I was walking the streets of Rome last week, thinking of you. 💛

Picture this: Rome, the eternal city, where history and modernity intertwine like espresso and gelato.

Well, let me tell you, my friends, marketing is no different! It's a mix of ancient wisdom and cutting-edge strategies that creates marketing magic.

When I stood in the mighty Colosseum, I absolutely felt like a gladiator - a gladiator battling tourists with selfie sticks, perhaps. But nonetheless, I couldn't help but draw a connection to our need for show-stopping content and marketing campaigns that resonate with our target audience. Just like the Colosseum commanded attention with its grandeur, our marketing messaging and images must captivate, engage, and leave our audience craving more.

Speaking of leaving a lasting impression, the Trevi Fountain (where I'm pictured here) is so much more than tossing a coin and making a wish; it's about stirring emotions and creating a splash. Exceptional marketing is like that—evoking strong emotions and making waves in our customers' hearts.

And then there was the Roman Forum, which long, long ago was the epicenter of Rome and buzzed with activity and a sense of community. In fact, I learned that the word “basilica” (a structure you can find in basically any of the 900 churches in Rome) did not originate as a religious building - it traces back to the second century BC, where this remarkable architectural hall served as a communal space with diverse purposes, from politics and law courts to bustling centers of commerce and even venues for entertainment. The ancient ruins of the first basilica in Rome exemplify the essence of community. Similarly, every one of our marketing efforts should be about building lasting connections.

Rome's architectural marvels didn't come overnight. It took careful planning and craftsmanship to create structures that have stood the test of time. The same goes for our marketing strategies.

So, this week, I hope you'll ask yourself these 3 questions when thinking about your marketing:

  • What's my plan for continued customer research that will produce jaw-dropping content that captures attention like a gladiator in the arena?

  • What will add depth to my brand storytelling—what narratives will resonate and leave a mark, just like that awe-inspiring Trevi fountain?

  • What will I do this week to engage with my audience, foster conversations, and create a space where my customers feel valued?

Walking amidst ancient Roman ruins also made me consider something else - Rome's sheer adaptability through the ages. This city has evolved and reinvented itself so much throughout history, while staying true to its essence. As marketers, we need to set a “north star” with our marketing, and also be flexible and open to change—embracing emerging technologies, seizing new opportunities, and adapting to an ever-evolving customer landscape.

My fellow marketers, as I soaked up the Roman sunshine and the vibrancy of this incredible city, I couldn't help but draw inspiration from every corner. Let's infuse our campaigns with the magic of Rome—content that wows like the Colosseum, storytelling that stirs emotions like the Trevi Fountain, community building like the Roman Forum, and adaptability that mirrors the city itself.

Buona giornata e a presto!
